A dhow is a traditional Arabic sailing vessel. Primarily used near the coast of the Arabian peninsula, India and East Africa. A larger dhow may have a crew of approximately thirty while smaller dhows have crews typically ranging around twelve. Sails were the main means of propulsion. In the Mid 17th century, Arabs were using many kinds of ships called Dhows for many purposes to live on the sea sources. The most famous and most use in ships were called Al-Boom and widely used in the region for all kinds of activities.

There was the Boom Ghawas dhows and it was used for pearls hunting. Boom Ma'y for sweet water delivery. Teshalah for shipping stones for building. The big Boom Saffar for long distance sailing, and Boom Gatta'a for short distance sailing.   Top>>

 

The Ship contains hundreds of parts and each part has its own name and definition. For instance, (Beess) is the base of the ship. (Sattoor or A'nafah) is the upper front. (Sreedan) is the cooking box. (Malej, Khad) are the long woods- Leehan in the bottom above "Beess". (Kana) is the back piece of wood that hold "Sekkan" - end piece of the ship. "Dhow" or "Fat'h al kareem"Boom is one of the biggest and the famous among arabic dhow ships. It was built by Al-estad Abdullah bin Rashid in 1913, It was a huge ship and was able to carry 5000 mun (375 Ton). # There were special sails for different weather condition ike "Terkate" and "Sefdairah".
